Upgrade to MCIPS

MCIPS is your ‘professional licence’ and a grade of membership that recognises your formal qualification together with your work experience. This globally acknowledged award offers you many career benefits and you can apply through a simple application process.

What are the criteria required to apply:

To achieve MCIPS you must have:

Completed by CIPS assessment or exemption all of the following CIPS qualifications:

  • Diploma in procurement and supply, and
  • Advanced diploma in procurement and supply, and
  • Professional diploma in procurement and supply,
  • CIPS accredited specialist qualifications 

In addition to either of the qualification routes above, you must also have three years’ work experience in one of the following roles:

  • Responsibility in a post that covers procurement and supply related activity. Responsibility can include budgets, inventory, human and physical resources, policies, procedures, processes and information
  • Responsible for the provision of an advisory or consultative service at a senior management level, that relates to procurement and supply activity
  • Responsible for delivering learning to others that is related to procurement and supply activities, and positioned at a UK graduate level
  • Made a contribution to higher-level learning or research, that is related to procurement and supply subject matter. Higher-level learning is defined as being contained within a PhD or through published work in eminent higher level publications
  • Has ultimate, but not necessarily direct, responsibility for procurement and supply related function in an organisation.

You are eligible to apply for an upgrade within 5 years of having achieved your qualification determined by the date on the original certificate
. After this date you may have to consider an alternative route to MCIPS.

Application process

Before applying please ensure your membership is up to date. An application to upgrade to MCIPS is free of charge and should be sent to qualifications@cips.org

Information required by those holding the required CIPS qualifications:

  • A current CV detailing your procurement and supply role
  • Written confirmation from your line manager of your minimum of three years’ experience in a post of responsibility in the procurement and supply profession.


Applicants who are not able to obtain a line manager’s confirmation may provide a self-certified testimonial together with:

  • A current CV detailing your procurement and supply role
  • Two referees from professionals who will be able to verify the contents of the CV.

This route would typically apply to those who are self-employed, taking career breaks or who are currently unemployed.

Information required by those holding a CIPS accredited qualification:

If you are applying based on a CIPS accredited programme such as an accredited specialist degree you will need to provide a copy of the relevant qualification certificate and notification of results plus the additional information noted above.

Letter Templates

To make your upgrade to MCIPS process as simple and trouble-free as possible, we have set up three template letters to help members to apply. They are:

Letter 1 – Individual's covering letter - stating your name, membership number and route to membership. You must also include your curriculum vitae (CV).

Letter 2 – Line manager's testimonial letter – your line manager should complete details of this letter and return it to the member.

Letter 3 – Self-certified application letter including names of two referees. You must also include your CV.

Notification of outcome

You will be notified of your upgrade and an MCIPS welcome pack including certificate will be sent in the post within 6 working weeks of the upgrade taking place.  If you  have not been approved, CIPS will advise individual members in writing within 3 working weeks of their next steps.

Use of designatory letters- MCIPS

After MCIPS membership has been confirmed, you are able to use the designatory letters  after your name for as long as your membership remains current. Your new membership status will also be referenced on the Professional Register.
